Designed for cross platforms
As Singlife's digital presence expanded, the need for a consistent and efficient design approach across both desktop responsive and app platforms became apparent. While efforts were made to maintain a cohesive design language, challenges arose in ensuring consistency between the two platforms.
To address these challenges and streamline the design process, the Life Design System was developed. This unified framework centralises design assets, enforces design standards, and accelerates time-to-market, enabling UX team to deliver high-quality digital products efficiently.
As Lead Designer, I spearhead the creation of the Life Design System. Key responsibilities included:
• Design System
• Design Principles
• Design Style Guide
• Guidelines
• Prototype
• Achieved full adoption across a team of 10 UX designers.
• Established three fully published design libraries: Foundations, Components, and Global Colours.
• Developed modular, scalable components to ensure consistent user experiences.
2023 (Continuous iterations)
To address the growing inconsistencies in our digital experiences, we developed the Life Design System (LDS). This centralised framework unifies our design assets, enforces design standards, and streamlines our design process.
Core libraries
Foundations, Components, and Global Colours
Consistent and scalable visual language
Ensures cohesive and adaptable user experiences across products
Integrated UX writing
Streamlines copy and reduces repetitive consultations with UX writers
To ensure successful implementation and sustainability, we established a robust operational framework:
Governance and decision-making
Collaborated with decision-makers to align component creation with long-term goals.
Collaboration with Tech
Partnered with the tech lead to implement the system in the Storybook, aligning design and development processes.
The Life Design System has transformed design processes and business operations at Singlife, with qualitative feedback highlighting its success as quantitative metrics are finalised.
Enhanced design efficiency
By streamlining workflows with pre-built components, designers have more freedom to engage in creative and strategic work, significantly boosting responsiveness to market needs.
Established consistency and scalability
Standardising design assets has led to a cohesive user experience, enabling quicker adaptation to new requirements and speeding up time-to-market for features.
Improved operational gains
By minimising rework and redundancy, the system has driven enhanced development efficiency, ensuring operational consistency across Singlife’s digital offerings.
Implementing the LDS presented several challenges:
Governance and decision making Establishing a clear framework for decision-making was crucial to align component creation with long-term goals.
Technical Integration
Collaborating with the tech team to ensure seamless integration into the Storybook was essential to prevent redundant fixes.
Organisational buy-in
Continuous advocacy is necessary to foster a culture of adoption and utilisation.
To ensure the LDS's ongoing success, we've implemented the following strategies:
Bi-weekly meetings
Regular meetings facilitate feedback and refinement.
SOP for maintainance
A comprehensive SOP guides maintenance and updates.
The vision for the continued evolution of the Life Design System encompasses several key areas:
The Life Design System serves as a cornerstone in unifying Singlife’s design strategy, significantly enhancing both operational efficiency and user experience.
Through collaborative efforts and strategic foresight, the system not only tackles immediate design challenges but also sets the stage for future innovation and growth together.
